Heh. Have been playing with The Drabble-Matic. Loads of fun. I used the two main characters from my NaNo novel and got a couple of almost coherent drabbles. Except, ignore that “brother” thing, because that is SO not true. Heh. My favourite is “The Adventure of the Butterfly”.
To Carefully Reach
Edmund and Zeva were celebrating a fey Valentine’s Day together. Edmund had cooked a feathery dinner and they ate under the blanket by candlelight.
“My darling,” Zeva said, stroking Edmund’s hand, “I have something for you.” She gave a box to Edmund. “It is but a twilit token of my scented love.”
Edmund opened the box. Inside was a cat-like cocoa! He gazed at it snarkily. Then he gazed at Zeva snarkily. “It’s shadowed,” Edmund said. “Come here and let me reach you.”
Just then, a burning crone sprang out of hiding and cackled with the grace of a hummingbird sipping from wisteria. “Your happiness will not last!” she said in an iridescent voice and dropped a piece of paper onto the dinner table.
Zeva read it. “It’s a page from a diary. It says…it says that you’re my brother.”
They stared at each other gently as the crone cackled some more. Edmund’s shoulder began to tremble. Then Zeva shrugged, pulled out a sword, and hit the crone on her neck. She fell over dead.
“Problem solved!” Edmund said and kissed Zeva slyly. “This is a musical Valentine’s Day!”
They tenderly burned the diary page in the candle and never told another soul.
And then they reached each other all night long.
The Adventure Of The Butterfly
Edmund and Zeva were out for a burning Valentine’s walk under the blanket. As they went, Zeva rested her hand on Edmund’s hand. It was the most romantic walk ever. But even though the day was so musical, Edmund was filled with cat-like dread.
“Do you suppose it’s feathery here?” he asked gently.
“You iridescent silly,” Zeva said, tickling Edmund with her vase. “It’s completely fey.”
Just then, a scented butterfly leapt out from behind a cocoa and reached Zeva in the neck. “Aaargh!” Zeva screamed.
Things looked twilit. But Edmund, although he was shadowed, knew he had to save his love. He grabbed a sword and, with the grace of a hummingbird sipping from wisteria, beat the butterfly carefully until it ran off. “That will teach you to reach innocent people.”
Then he clasped Zeva close. Zeva was bleeding slyly. “My darling,” Edmund said, and pressed his lips to Zeva’s shoulder.
“I love you,” Zeva said tenderly, and expired in Edmund’s arms.
Edmund never loved again.
And here’s one about Rolly and Apple:
The Battle For The Cat
Under a waterfall, Roland rolled his cat. He had been busy with the cat for hours and now wanted nothing more than a martial cuddle or a frightening massage from his lover Appleblossom.
He said this last thought out loud, and all of a sudden his painted Appleblossom appeared at the door, grinning sarcastically.
“Put down the cat,” Appleblossom said swiftly. “Unless you want me to roll that cat on your hair.”
Roland put down the cat. He was lovely. He had never seen Appleblossom so clear before and it made him pink.
Appleblossom picked up the cat, then withdrew a fire from her fingers. “Don’t be so lovely,” Appleblossom said with a clear grimace. “A brownie bit my smile this morning, and everything became able. Now with this cat and this fire I can swiftly rule the world!”
Roland clutched his bookish smile dangerously. This was his lover, his painted Appleblossom, now staring at him with a clear fingers.
“Fight it!” Roland shouted. “The brownie just wants the cat for his own painted devices! He doesn’t love you, not the martial way I do!”
Roland could see Appleblossom trembling dangerously. Roland reached out his hair and touched Appleblossom’s fingers swiftly. He was painted, so painted, but he knew only his bookish love for Appleblossom would break the brownie’s spell.
Sure enough, Appleblossom dropped the cat with a thunk. “Oh, Roland,” she squealed. “I’m so martial, can you ever forgive me?”
But Roland had already moved under a waterfall. Like the wind that blew eerily through the trees, he pressed his hair into Appleblossom’s fingers. And as they fell together in an able fit of love, the cat lay on the floor, pink and forgotten.
